Mastering the 50/30/20 Rule with WiseMoney

🎯

The 50/30/20 rule is one of the most effective, stress-free ways to budget. The concept is simple: you divide your after-tax income into three buckets: 50% for Needs, 30% for Wants, and 20% for Savings and Investments.

However, tracking these buckets across multiple bank accounts and credit cards can be a nightmare. That's exactly why we built the Financial Polygon and Custom Waterfall Chart in WiseMoney.

Step 1: Categorize Your Spending

When you log a transaction in WiseMoney, you aren't just selecting a mundane category like "Groceries." You are assigning it to a structural bucket:

  • Needs (50%): Groceries, Rent, Utilities, Insurance.
  • Wants (30%): Dining out, Entertainment, Subscriptions, Vacations.
  • Savings (20%): Emergency Fund, Roth IRA, Crypto, High-Yield Savings.

Step 2: Monitor the Polygon

Head over to your Dashboard and look at the Financial Polygon. As you spend throughout the month, the polygon dynamically expands toward the edge of the graph.

If the "Wants" axis is spiking dangerously close to the outer edge (100%), but your "Savings" axis is barely moving, you instantly know that your 50/30/20 ratio is completely out of balance. No spreadsheets required—just a quick glance.

Step 3: Watch the Speedometer

To ensure you don't blow past your total monthly income, keep an eye on the Automotive Speedometer. It calculates your total burn rate in real-time. If you stay in the green and yellow zones, you're safe. If the needle hits the redline, it's time to cut back on the Wants bucket immediately.
